Notable Jordan Shoe Collaborations: A Timeline originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

The Air Jordan brand collaborations might just be the most popular shoe in the northern hemisphere. Although once rare, new versions of shoes are now everywhere, all the time.

Kicks began their empire in 2005 when the Undefeated Air Jordan 4 was released, and since then a dynasty has been created. Eminem participated, Mackelmore and now even Travis Scott has a custom mocha-colored shoe.

Shoes are far from being a fad, in fact, the trend seems to be getting bigger and bigger. Celebrities, multi-billion dollar companies, designer brands and even sports teams have taken on the responsibility of creating a stylish new sneaker. It’s no wonder the iterations seem endless.

Let’s go back to where it all started: the beginning of the collaborations with Air Jordan. Are the first generations of Jordan even beginning to compare to the new models introduced today?

Although MJ produced his first shoe design, Nike Air Ships, in 1984, the Undefeated x Air Jordan 4 was the first collaboration with the brand:

This model inspired by Air Jordan’s MA-1 flight jacket was sculpted in 2005 but never retailed. However, this year, the “olive” shoe will finally hit the stores. The Los Angeles-based boutique’s founders, James Bond and Eddie Cruz, auctioned off all 72 pairs made from the model. It was the first time the Jordan brand had collaborated on a primary product with a third party. It is and always has been one of the most popular shoes in the line.

Similar to the Undefeated model, only 50 pairs of Eminem shoes were created for Slim Shady’s friends and family, leaving the shoe at a market price of around $30,000. The blue suede sneakers are considered one of the rarest Jordans ever.

These Varsity Red elephant-print shoes have a navy denim base and button-style eyelets, mimicking one of Michael Jordan‘s favorite pieces of clothing: jeans. This collaboration with the famous clothing brand was MJ’s first signature shoe. Only 2,223 pairs were produced and the brand is now extremely collectible, for around $2,000.

These custom Eminem sneakers were slightly easier to obtain than the Eminem 4, as 313 pairs were created versus 50. The shoes were a tribute to Marshall’s favorite Jordan model and simultaneously reflected the content of his “The Way I Am” album. The inspiration for the light gray suede shoe comes from the rapper’s hometown of Detroit
