The Doernbecher Freestyle gave many the opportunity of a lifetime: to create their own pair of sneakers. And alongside the Nike team, these budding young designers translated their experience and struggles into a tangible, heartfelt colorway.
One of this year’s lucky winners, Cidni O’Brien, suffered from chest pain while playing football in 2018. She was then diagnosed with an abnormal aortic origin of the left coronary artery; this meant that his heart was not getting the amount of oxygen it needed, causing extremely poor heart function. Thankfully, O’Brien bounced back in six months after major heart surgery, and she’s now back on the court with her team, the Lebanon Warriors.
The 16-year-old Air Force 1 Fontanka is dedicated to his teammates and the animals he loves. On the laces, the names of his goats, parrot, donkey, chicken, dog and fish are proudly displayed, while O’Brien’s horse, Tank, gets a special mention on the left sockliner. Nikki, the young athlete’s mother, is celebrated along the right, and O’Brien comments that “[she] wouldn’t be here without her. Plus, if you flip the shoe over its outsole, you’ll find a shrimp pasta graphic, a nod to O’Brien’s favorite food.
